Managing Acoustics with Timber Perforated Panels

Managing acoustics, particularly in large or potentially noisy spaces, is an important consideration when designing interiors to make the space as comfortable and user friendly as possible.

Sound absorptive acoustic products are necessary to control reverberated noise in building interiors to allow occupants to communicate clearly and be comfortable in an interior environment. Poor acoustics can negatively affect productivity, mood, health and enjoyment of being in a space.(1)

Timber has inherent acoustic properties and as a result can help maintain the desired indoor environmental quality - whether the objective is to enhance sound or reduce sound. Its network of small interlocking wood cells converts sound energy into heat energy by frictional resistance within these cells and by vibrations within their sub-structure.(2) These properties of timber are why many large or public spaces are lined with timber perforated panels or timber battens.

Important considerations when designing the acoustics of a space are its use, size and shape, surfaces and any background noise. Due to the complexity in acoustic design and the specific requirements for particular spaces, we highly recommend engaging an acoustic consultant at the earliest stage of the design process.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to designing acoustics.

Wellington Architectural can create customised timber perforated panels to suit any project and any design. Our timber perforated panels use holes or slots to increase the amount of sound absorption, essentially breaking up the energy of the soundwave. By breaking up the sound, the echoes in the space are reduced.

In the case of Brindabella Christian College (pictured), Wellington Architectural was engaged to clad the walls and ceilings of the gymnasium space with perforated plywood panels. These panels were designed by the architect in consultation with acoustic engineer Acoustic Directions to ensure acoustic comfort in the space. The use, size and surfaces were considered in the design process and the custom slotted design in birch plywood ensured a high level of sound absorption while also meeting the aesthetic needs of the project.

There are many different options when designing ways to manage acoustics in a space. If acoustics are considered in the early stages of a project, the solution can be cost effective and also work with the design and aesthetics of the space.
